Morocco strengthens regional solidarity with pesticide donation to Mauritania

Morocco has provided 100,000 liters of pesticides to Mauritania to bolster its fight against desert locust swarms, which threaten agricultural and pastoral resources. The handover took place near Nouakchott, highlighting the strong cooperation between the two nations across various sectors. Representatives from the Moroccan Embassy, Mauritanian officials, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) attended the event.

The donation is part of Morocco’s ongoing collaboration with Mauritania, supported by technical expertise and coordination through the FAO’s Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region (CLCPRO). Mohamed Lamine Hamouni, CLCPRO Executive Secretary, praised Morocco’s swift and effective response, emphasizing the importance of cross-border cooperation in combating locust infestations. Mauritanian officials also acknowledged Morocco's role in supporting food security and environmental preservation.

Morocco’s leadership in locust control has been recognized internationally, with its National Anti-Locust Center (CNLAA) in Aït Melloul serving as a regional hub for expertise, surveillance, and crisis response. The country has shifted from broad-spectrum pesticide usage to more sustainable methods, including biopesticides and advanced tracking systems such as FAO’s Locust Pesticide Management System. This evolution reflects Morocco’s commitment to environmental responsibility and regional solidarity, enabling it to provide critical support to neighboring countries during crises.
