Morocco launches comprehensive emergency plan to combat severe cold wave

As a biting cold wave sweeps across Morocco, bringing plummeting temperatures and heavy snowfall to several regions, the Moroccan government has swiftly mobilized a nationwide emergency response plan to support affected citizens. The initiative, coordinated under the directives of King Mohammed VI, aims to mitigate the impact of the harsh weather conditions and ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations.

The Ministry of the Interior has spearheaded the effort, bringing together various ministries, administrations, and agencies to implement a robust strategy. Local authorities, including governors and regional leaders, have been tasked with closely monitoring the situation, coordinating interventions, and executing preventive measures to address potential risks.

At the heart of the response is the activation of a centralized command and alert center at the Ministry of the Interior, supported by regional and local monitoring committees. This year’s national winter response plan has been expanded to cover 2,014 remote villages across 241 municipalities in 28 provinces, targeting over 872,000 residents. Notably, the plan now includes 185 additional villages, with a particular focus on areas recently devastated by earthquakes and floods.

Key components of the emergency plan include ensuring the steady supply of essential goods, such as heating materials, to affected regions. Authorities are also deploying heavy machinery near roads at risk of closure to maintain accessibility and prevent isolation. In addition, the government is distributing vital supplies, including food, blankets, and firewood, to families in need, while providing animal feed to support livestock owners.

Rescue operations are being organized to assist those in urgent situations, and efforts are underway to maintain road connectivity and ensure the functionality of communication networks in impacted areas. The Ministry of the Interior has emphasized that national and local authorities remain fully mobilized to address any challenges posed by the extreme weather, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding citizens and their properties while meeting basic needs.

This comprehensive response underscores Morocco’s proactive approach to disaster management, highlighting the government’s dedication to protecting its citizens during times of crisis. As the cold wave persists, the coordinated efforts of authorities aim to provide relief and stability to those most affected by the severe weather conditions.
