Morocco and UAE sign MoU to strengthen meteorological cooperation
Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to reinforce collaboration in the field of meteorology, officials announced Wednesday in Marrakech. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 19th World Water Congress by Mohamed Dkhissi, Director General of Morocco’s Meteorology Directorate (DGM), and Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the UAE National Meteorology Center.
The MoU establishes a framework for continuous cooperation and dialogue, aiming to enhance both parties’ scientific and technical expertise in atmospheric and marine meteorology, aviation forecasts, and environmental monitoring.
Under the agreement, the two agencies will coordinate the exchange of meteorological data and information, support research projects, and collaborate on numerical forecasting, cloud seeding, and the monitoring of sand and dust storms. The initiative also includes the training of technical staff, joint field visits to evaluate capacities, and participation in conferences, workshops, and forums.
Dkhissi highlighted the agreement’s focus on cloud seeding, an innovative approach to address water challenges, and emphasized the use of meteorological radars and artificial intelligence to improve forecasts of extreme weather events and climate change impacts.
Al Mandous welcomed the MoU, stressing its potential to boost knowledge exchange, strengthen scientific expertise, and enhance meteorological forecasting capabilities. He also noted promising prospects for leveraging AI in operational weather prediction.
The 19th World Water Congress, held under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI and co-organized by Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water and the International Water Resources Association (IWRA), continues until December 5. The congress, themed “Water in a Changing World: Innovation and Adaptation,” provides a platform for experts, researchers, policymakers, and the private sector to share knowledge and develop innovative solutions for global water management challenges.
