Morocco and Japan strengthen fisheries collaboration for sustainable growth

Morocco’s Secretary of State in charge of Maritime Fisheries, Zakia Driouich, convened with Japan’s Ambassador to Morocco, Nakata Masahiro, on Tuesday in Rabat to deliberate on enhancing bilateral cooperation within the fisheries sector. This meeting underscored a mutual commitment to deepen ties and explore new collaborative opportunities after over four decades of partnership.

Driouich highlighted the robust foundations that characterize Morocco-Japan relations in this domain, emphasizing Japan’s role as a longstanding and dependable ally. She acknowledged Japan’s early and unwavering involvement, noting it as the sector’s initial and most dedicated donor.

The discussions not only reflected on significant past achievements but also looked forward to emerging opportunities shaped by evolving global ocean governance and environmental conditions. Among the notable joint initiatives mentioned was the Al Hassan Al Marrakchi oceanographic research vessel, completed in 2018 with Japanese financial assistance. Furthermore, the two nations recently embarked on the development of a next-generation fishing village in Souira K’dima, alongside efforts to expand aquaculture as an integral part of Morocco’s blue economy strategy.

Driouich and Masahiro also expressed a shared interest in revitalizing the trilateral cooperation initiative known as PRECAF II. This program aims to unite Morocco, Japan, and several African nations in supporting training and capacity-building initiatives within the fisheries sector across the continent.

The officials acknowledged the necessity of maintaining close coordination within regional and international organizations concerned with marine resources and ocean-related challenges. They recognized that the global maritime sector faces numerous challenges requiring a collective and well-coordinated response.

Preparations are underway for the upcoming annual consultation session on the Morocco-Japan Fisheries Agreement, which is set to take place in Tokyo later this year. At the conclusion of their meeting, both parties expressed their intent to inject new vigor into their cooperation, acknowledging that contemporary challenges demand innovative solutions and renewed dedication.
