Morocco and Finland strengthen ties in climate and meteorology cooperation

Morocco and Finland have solidified their collaborative efforts in climate science and meteorology by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Congress in Geneva, held from October 20 to 23. The agreement underscores their shared commitment to advancing meteorological research, modernizing weather forecasting systems, and exchanging scientific expertise.

The MoU was signed by Mohamed Dkhissi, Director General of Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), and Petteri Taalas, Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute and former WMO Secretary-General. During the ceremony, Taalas commended Morocco’s environmental leadership under King Mohammed VI, emphasizing the country’s pivotal contributions to global climate action, such as hosting the COP22 climate conference in 2016. He expressed Finland’s enthusiasm for deepening ties with Morocco, highlighting the agreement as a testament to their shared vision for sustainability.

Dkhissi described the partnership as a significant milestone in scientific collaboration, aimed at enhancing forecasting capabilities and bolstering climate resilience through cutting-edge infrastructure. The initiative aligns with the objectives of the WMO’s “Early Warnings for All” program, which seeks to achieve universal early warning coverage by 2027.

This agreement builds on a history of high-level exchanges between the two nations. Earlier this year, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in Helsinki to explore expanded cooperation in technology, environmental initiatives, and economic development. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to renewable energy projects, water resource management, and green hydrogen initiatives, while also planning a 2025 business seminar to promote joint investment opportunities.

By deepening partnerships in sustainability and innovation, Morocco and Finland are shaping a dynamic framework for environmental resilience and green transitions, reinforcing their shared dedication to tackling global climate challenges.
