Morocco adopts higher education law amid rising university tensions
Morocco’s Parliament approved Law No. 59.24 on higher education and scientific research on January 20, marking a key step in ongoing university reforms. The Ministry of Higher Education highlighted the law’s adoption as a sign of institutional governance and collective commitment to developing Morocco’s universities.
However, tensions persist on campus. The National Union of Higher Education (SNESup) announced a national strike on February 3–5, criticizing the law as flawed and denouncing the lack of dialogue with the government. The union argues that the legislation fails to address the concerns of academic staff despite repeated requests for consultation and suspension.
