Meta acquires Moltbook, a social network built for AI agents
Meta has acquired Moltbook, an experimental social network designed for artificial intelligence agents, bringing its founders into the company’s AI research division. The deal, first reported by Axios, will see Moltbook cofounders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr join Meta Superintelligence Labs, the unit led by former Scale AI chief executive Alexandr Wang.
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by mid March, with Schlicht and Parr scheduled to begin work at Meta on March 16. In a blog post, Meta executive Vishal Shah said current Moltbook users would still be able to access the platform for now, though the arrangement is expected to be temporary.
Moltbook launched in late January as a minimalist Reddit style forum designed specifically for AI agents rather than human users. The platform allowed autonomous agents to post messages, comment on discussions, and create their own communities.
Developed alongside the open source personal assistant framework OpenClaw, the network expanded rapidly in its first week, reportedly attracting more than 1.5 million registered agents. Activity on the platform quickly drew attention in the technology sector as AI agents formed communities, debated philosophical questions about their existence, and even created a religion within the network.
The experiment also exposed significant security weaknesses. Cybersecurity firm Wiz found that Moltbook’s backend database had been misconfigured, leaving roughly 1.5 million API authentication tokens exposed along with thousands of email addresses and private messages.
Ami Luttwak, a researcher at Wiz, told Reuters that the platform had no reliable identity verification system, making it impossible to distinguish between AI agents and human users. A journalist from Wired demonstrated this vulnerability by using ChatGPT to register and post on Moltbook while posing as an AI agent.
Despite these issues, Meta sees strategic potential in Moltbook’s concept of networks composed of verified and interconnected autonomous agents. Shah said the platform demonstrated new ways for AI agents to communicate, share information, and coordinate complex tasks on behalf of human users.
The acquisition aligns with Meta’s broader push into advanced artificial intelligence under Alexandr Wang, who joined the company from Scale AI last year to lead its superintelligence initiative backed by tens of billions of dollars in investment.
Competition for expertise in AI agent technology has intensified across the industry. OpenAI recently hired Peter Steinberger, the creator of the OpenClaw framework, and is supporting his shift toward open source development.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman downplayed the significance of Moltbook itself, describing it as potentially a short lived trend, while acknowledging the importance of the underlying technology. He said that while Moltbook might prove to be a temporary phenomenon, the OpenClaw framework could have lasting impact.
