Macron highlights a “unique relationship” between Armenia and France during state visit
During his visit to Yerevan, French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian massacres. He laid a white flower in honor of the estimated 1.5 million Armenians who died during the Ottoman Empire period, an event recognized as genocide by France. He described the memorial as a place of remembrance where “each name must be heard and oblivion must be prevented.”
A “unique relationship” between two nations
Macron highlighted the deep and historical ties between France and Armenia, referring to a “singular relationship” built on solidarity and shared memory. France is home to a large Armenian diaspora of around 400,000 people, which has strengthened cultural and political connections between the two countries.
Growing European orientation and regional tensions
The French president praised Armenia’s increasing orientation toward Europe, despite its complex historical and security ties with Russia. He noted Armenia’s participation in European political forums and its interest in closer cooperation with the European Union.
Security, defense, and economic cooperation
France and Armenia are expected to strengthen their strategic partnership, particularly in defense. Cooperation includes radar systems, military training, and artillery contracts. Discussions also cover infrastructure projects, transport development, and potential industrial partnerships involving European companies.
Balancing between Russia and the West
Macron also pointed to Armenia’s difficult geopolitical position, emphasizing that Russia has not always played a stabilizing role during regional crises. Despite this, Armenia remains linked to Russian-led security structures, while gradually seeking closer ties with Europe.
