Spain issues Red Heat alerts as temperatures expected to exceed 40°C

Spain has placed three regions under its highest level of heat warning as an intense heatwave grips the eastern part of the country, with temperatures forecast to rise above 40°C in several areas.

Spain's national meteorological agency issued red alerts for parts of Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Zaragoza area, warning of exceptional weather conditions that pose serious risks to both people and property.

Under Spain's weather warning system, a red alert is reserved for situations involving an exceptional level of danger, indicating the potential for severe impacts on public health, infrastructure and essential services.

The latest heatwave is expected to persist until Thursday, prolonging a period of extreme temperatures that has affected large parts of southern Europe during the summer season.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors to take precautions during the hottest hours of the day, remain hydrated and limit outdoor activities, particularly for vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children and individuals with underlying health conditions.

The episode adds to a series of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves experienced across the Iberian Peninsula in recent years. Scientists have linked the growing severity and duration of such extreme weather events to broader trends associated with climate change, which continue to heighten heat-related risks across Europe.

Emergency services and local authorities remain on alert as the extreme temperatures increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses and place additional pressure on public health systems and wildfire prevention efforts.
