Lithuania warned Hungary could pose NATO and EU security risk
Polish authorities have highlighted concerns that Hungarian officials may have posed a security risk within NATO and the European Union. The warnings date back to 2019, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, amid reports of possible leaks of confidential information to Russia.
Hungary has maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with Russia, even as the EU supports Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Tusk indicated that Lithuania had requested Hungary’s exclusion from certain NATO meetings due to suspicions that sensitive information could be shared with Moscow.
Recent reports suggest that Hungarian officials may have communicated with Russian counterparts during EU meetings. While Hungarian authorities initially dismissed these claims, some officials have acknowledged consultations with non-EU countries, describing them as routine diplomatic practice.
The situation raises concerns about trust and information security among NATO allies and within EU institutions. Investigations and monitoring of sensitive communications continue as member states seek to ensure the integrity of their transatlantic alliances.
