European Union gives final approval to trade agreement with the United States
The European Union has formally approved its trade agreement with the United States, clearing the way for the deal to enter into force before the implementation deadline set by Washington. The decision follows months of legislative procedures and negotiations aimed at balancing economic cooperation with the protection of European commercial interests.
The agreement had already received the backing of the European Parliament, completing one of the final institutional steps required for ratification. With the approval of all 27 EU member states, the legislation is now ready to be implemented.
A central element of the agreement is the removal of European Union tariffs on most industrial and agricultural products imported from the United States. In return, the United States agreed to maintain a ceiling on tariffs applied to European exports, providing businesses on both sides of the Atlantic with greater predictability and market stability.
The trade framework is expected to strengthen transatlantic economic ties by reducing barriers to commerce, facilitating investment, and encouraging deeper cooperation between two of the world's largest economies. Officials have argued that lowering tariffs could improve supply chains, increase competitiveness, and create new opportunities for exporters and manufacturers.
The agreement also includes safeguard provisions designed to protect European interests. A review clause specifies that the arrangement will automatically expire at the end of 2029 unless both parties decide to renew or extend it. In addition, the European Commission retains the authority to suspend parts of the agreement if the United States does not remove additional tariffs on certain steel- and aluminum-related products within the agreed timeframe.
The ratification comes amid continuing efforts by both sides to reinforce economic cooperation while addressing longstanding trade disputes. Analysts believe the agreement could contribute to greater stability in global trade, although its long-term success will depend on the effective implementation of its commitments and the resolution of remaining tariff issues.
