Morocco set to enhance F-16 fleet with advanced long-range air-to-air missiles
A recent U.S. document indicates that Morocco is among the countries expected to benefit from an upgrade program for the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile, moving toward the more advanced AIM-120D4/C-9 variant, a development that would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Royal Moroccan Air Force.
The modernization program is designed to improve long-range engagement capabilities beyond visual range, strengthening the effectiveness of Morocco’s air defense and interception missions. It also aligns with the country’s ongoing modernization of its F-16V Viper fighter jet fleet, which represents a key pillar of its air force upgrade strategy.
The upgraded missile system is expected to feature improved guidance and tracking technologies, enhanced resistance to electronic warfare and jamming, as well as higher operational reliability. These advancements would provide Moroccan pilots with greater precision and survivability in modern aerial combat scenarios.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is one of the most widely used beyond-visual-range missiles in the world, with an operational range exceeding 160 kilometers under optimal conditions and speeds of over Mach 4. It uses an active radar homing system and a “fire-and-forget” capability, allowing pilots to engage multiple targets at long distances with reduced exposure.
The F-16 Block 72, part of Morocco’s upgraded fleet, is capable of carrying up to eight AIM-120 missiles in addition to AIM-9X short-range air-to-air missiles, significantly boosting its air combat versatility.
This development reflects Morocco’s broader defense modernization strategy, aimed at strengthening its deterrence capabilities and maintaining air superiority amid evolving regional security challenges and increasing competition in advanced military technologies.
