Journalist Eid Achkar passes away

Lebanese journalist Eid Achkar, founder and editor-in-chief of the media outlet Al Kalima, passed away on January 19, 2026, following what was described as a sudden health issue, according to the National News Agency (ANI).

Throughout his career, Achkar made notable contributions to ANI as well as to several Lebanese newspapers, including Al-Anouar and Al-Bayrak. Known for his independent voice and firm positions, he earned respect across the journalistic community for his integrity and intellectual depth.

Paying tribute to the late journalist, Joseph Kossaifi, president of the Order of Editors, expressed deep sorrow over the sudden loss. In a statement, he praised Achkar as a journalist “who was never afraid to take a stand,” highlighting his honesty, humility, sharp wit, and strong moral principles.

Originally from Zahlé, the capital of the Bekaa Valley, Achkar maintained a close bond with his hometown, which he often reflected in his professional and personal life. His passing marks the loss of a respected media figure and a committed advocate of responsible journalism in Lebanon.
