Japan urges Iran to release detained national amid media reports
Japan has formally called on Iran to release one of its citizens who has reportedly been detained since January, as diplomatic tensions surface following media reports about the case.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki said Tokyo is demanding the individual’s “early release.” While authorities did not disclose the identity of the detainee, officials confirmed that the Japanese national was taken into custody by Iranian authorities on January 20.
The case gained wider attention after reports indicated that the person detained may be linked to NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster. According to international media outlets, the individual was allegedly serving as a bureau chief in Tehran at the time of the arrest and is believed to be held at Evin Prison, a facility known for housing political detainees and foreign nationals.
Iranian authorities have not publicly commented on the matter. The absence of an official statement from Tehran has left details surrounding the detention unclear, including the specific charges, if any, brought against the Japanese citizen.
Japanese officials say the government remains in contact with the detainee and their family and is providing necessary support. When asked about the situation, NHK stated that it prioritizes the safety of its staff and declined to provide further details at this stage.
The incident comes amid a complex regional environment in which foreign nationals have occasionally been detained in Iran, prompting diplomatic engagement between Tehran and other governments. Observers note that such cases often require delicate negotiations conducted through official channels.
Tokyo has reiterated its expectation that the matter be resolved promptly, emphasizing the importance of transparency and due process in cases involving foreign citizens.
