Iran executes man convicted of spying for Israel
Iranian authorities announced on Wednesday the execution of a man convicted of spying for Israel’s intelligence service, at a time when the country is facing internal unrest and heightened regional tensions.
According to state-linked judicial media, the death sentence against Ali Ardestani was carried out after he was found guilty of cooperating with the Mossad. No official details were provided regarding the date of his arrest or the duration of his trial.
The announcement comes amid sporadic protests that began in Tehran in late December over soaring inflation and economic hardship. What initially started as demonstrations against rising living costs has gradually evolved into a broader political movement spreading to other parts of the country.
In recent days, Iranian media have reported the arrest of several individuals accused of links to Israeli intelligence. However, judicial authorities have not formally connected the execution to the ongoing protests.
Iran, which does not recognize the State of Israel, has long accused it of conducting covert operations, including sabotage against nuclear facilities and the targeted killing of Iranian scientists. Relations between the two countries remain deeply hostile following a brief but intense military confrontation earlier last year.
