Indonesian forces evacuate workers after deadly gold mine attack
Indonesian security forces have evacuated dozens of workers from a remote gold mining site in Central Papua following a deadly armed attack that left two people dead. Authorities confirmed that 75 individuals, including 26 Chinese nationals, were safely transported from the area as security operations continued.
The assault was reportedly carried out by members of the KKB, an armed group active in the region. According to local officials, the evacuation took place along the Musairo River, with police and military personnel coordinating efforts to secure the site and protect remaining workers.
Central Papua, located in Indonesia’s easternmost territory, has long experienced unrest linked to a separatist insurgency. Armed groups operating in the region have frequently targeted security forces, infrastructure, and at times civilians, contributing to ongoing instability.
The latest incident follows another violent episode earlier this month in which militants attacked a small aircraft, resulting in the deaths of both pilots. Authorities say investigations are underway to clarify the circumstances surrounding the most recent attack and to identify one of the victims.
The government has pledged to reinforce security measures in the area while maintaining efforts to stabilize the region. Analysts note that attacks on mining operations highlight the economic and strategic sensitivity of Papua, which is rich in natural resources but remains affected by decades of conflict.
