The federal government's National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) operates a mechanized diamond mining project in the area while also leasing shallow mines to individuals, families, and cooperative groups. These leases, costing a mere 200-250 rupees, allow ordinary citizens to try their luck at diamond hunting, typically using rudimentary tools and equipment.
Anupam Singh, an official at the state government's diamond office, explained the process to the BBC: "Any finds are handed over to the government diamond office, which then evaluates the stone." While discoveries of this magnitude are infrequent, they are not unheard of. In 2018, another laborer from the Bundelkhand region unearthed a diamond valued at 15 million rupees in a Panna mine.
For Gound, the path to this life-changing discovery began two months ago when his father leased a mine in Krishna Kalyanpur Patti village near Panna. Like many in the region, Gound's family turns to diamond mining during the monsoon season when other forms of labor, such as agriculture and masonry, are scarce. "We are very poor and have no other source of income. So we do this in the hope of making some money," Gound shared with the BBC.
The day of discovery unfolded like any other. Gound arrived at the site early in the morning, ready to perform his daily task of manually searching for precious stones. He described the arduous process: "We dig a pit, pull out chunks of soil and rock, wash them in a sieve, and then carefully sift through thousands of dried, tiny stones to look for diamonds."
It was during this painstaking sifting process that Gound's perseverance finally paid off. "I was sifting through the stones and saw something that resembled a piece of glass. I held it up to my eyes and saw a faint glint. That's when I knew I had found a diamond," he recounted.
Following protocol, Gound promptly took his find to the government diamond office for evaluation and weighing. Mr. Singh confirmed that the diamond would be sold at the next government auction, with Gound receiving compensation after the deduction of government royalties and taxes.

However, his first priority is to clear a debt of 500,000 rupees that has long burdened him.
