Nigeria: Deadly attack by armed gangs kills soldiers and local fighters

At least 20 people, including members of the security forces, were killed during an attack by armed gangs in central Nigeria, highlighting the persistent insecurity affecting several regions of the country.

The incident occurred in Plateau State, an area that has experienced recurring violence involving criminal groups, community conflicts and attacks targeting rural populations. Local organizations reported that the assault took place in villages in the Kanam district, where security personnel and community fighters were ambushed by heavily armed attackers.

Security forces targeted

According to local sources, the victims included soldiers and members of community defense groups who were conducting a security patrol when their convoy was attacked. Several vehicles were reportedly involved in the operation, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.

Reports indicate that at least a dozen members of the security forces were killed during the ambush, including senior officers. Several local militia members also lost their lives while attempting to repel the attackers.

Military officials confirmed the incident and acknowledged that soldiers were among the casualties. They also stated that security forces responded to the attack and inflicted significant losses on the armed groups during the confrontation.

Persistent insecurity in northern Nigeria

Plateau State lies in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, a region frequently affected by tensions between farming communities and pastoral groups, as well as by the activities of criminal gangs commonly referred to as “bandits.” These groups are often involved in kidnappings, cattle rustling and attacks on villages.

The deterioration of the security situation in northern Nigeria in recent months has led President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in several affected areas. Authorities have intensified military operations to restore stability and protect local populations.

Regional and international response

Nigeria’s security challenges have also drawn international attention. The country has sought assistance from partners to strengthen its fight against armed groups and extremist organizations operating in certain parts of the region.

Security analysts warn that improving safety in rural areas will require stronger coordination between federal forces, local communities and regional authorities.

For residents of affected communities, however, the latest attack is a reminder that insecurity remains a daily concern in parts of the country.
