French sailor seriously injured during military exercise in northern France

A young member of the French Navy is in critical condition after being seriously injured during a military exercise in northern France, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the coastal city of Boulogne-sur-Mer, located in the Pas-de-Calais region along the English Channel. The sailor, a 23-year-old marine rifleman, sustained a severe abdominal injury following the accidental discharge of a firearm on board a vessel during training activities.

According to initial information provided by prosecutors, the weapon reportedly fired unintentionally while another serviceman was cleaning or maintaining it. Investigators are currently examining the circumstances of the incident, and the working hypothesis at this stage is that the injury was unintentional.

The accident took place aboard the Abeille Normandie, a vessel often deployed along the northern French coastline for maritime assistance and safety operations.

Emergency services quickly transported the injured sailor to a hospital in Lille, where he underwent surgery. Officials indicated that his condition remains extremely serious.

Authorities from the maritime prefecture overseeing the English Channel and the North Sea confirmed that the injury occurred during an exercise conducted on the ship.

A formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident. The inquiry has been assigned to the maritime gendarmerie units in Boulogne-sur-Mer, with support from investigators based in Le Havre.

The vessel involved in the incident regularly operates in the region for maritime rescue and assistance missions. It is also frequently mobilized during operations aimed at helping migrants attempting to cross the Channel toward the United Kingdom.

Military authorities have not yet released further details while the investigation continues.
