Haiti’s president warns at the UN: “Our country is at war”
Speaking at the United Nations, Haiti’s transitional president Laurent Saint-Cyr described his country as “a nation at war”, urging the international community to step up its support.
He painted a grim picture: daily killings, mass displacement of over one million people, neighborhoods reduced to ashes, hospitals shut down, and doctors fleeing the violence. He compared Haiti’s tragedy to a “contemporary Guernica”unfolding just a few hours’ flight from the United States.
In 2023, the UN authorized the creation of the Multinational Security Mission (MMAS), led by Kenya, to support Haiti’s overwhelmed police. Yet, the deployment has fallen short, with only 1,000 officers on the ground instead of the 2,500 initially planned. Washington now advocates for an expanded force of over 5,500 personnel, including both police and soldiers, to combat gang violence more effectively.
President Saint-Cyr backed this initiative, warning that Haiti’s crisis could destabilize the wider region if left unchecked. He called for the same determination shown in counterterrorism efforts to confront the heavily armed criminal networksthreatening his country.
