France summons U.S. ambassador over comments on student death
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner will be summoned following controversial remarks from the Trump administration regarding the death of Quentin Deranque, a young nationalist student.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated on Sunday that the embassy’s comments on the tragedy “involve the national community” and emphasized that France rejects any political exploitation of the incident. Barrot added that France has “no lessons to receive regarding violence, particularly from reactionary international actors.” The exact date of the ambassador’s meeting has not yet been disclosed.
Earlier, the Trump administration criticized far-left political violence in France after Deranque’s death and urged that those responsible be brought to justice. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also commented on the situation, prompting a public exchange with French President Emmanuel Macron, who advised her to refrain from commenting on domestic affairs in other countries.
Ambassador Kushner, who assumed his post in Paris last summer, had previously been summoned by French authorities after remarks deemed unacceptable concerning anti-Semitism in France. On that occasion, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires attended in his absence.
