Five Mozambicans killed in Xenophobic violence in South Africa, says Maputo

The Mozambican government has announced that five of its citizens were killed during a wave of xenophobic violence that erupted over the weekend in South Africa. The incidents occurred in the coastal city of Mossel Bay, located in the Western Cape Province, where anti-migrant tensions reportedly escalated into violent attacks.

According to authorities in Maputo, around 800 Mozambican nationals were affected by the unrest. The government stated that seven Mozambicans lost their lives during the events. Five of the deaths were directly linked to xenophobic assaults, while two other victims died in a road accident while attempting to return to Mozambique.

The violence prompted hundreds of Mozambicans to leave South Africa. Officials reported that approximately 300 people returned home on their own, while more than 500 others sought temporary shelter in safe locations within the Western Cape. Repatriation efforts have since been launched to assist those wishing to return.

South African police confirmed that investigations are underway following the deaths of two men in an informal settlement in Mossel Bay. However, authorities have not officially established a connection between the fatalities and the xenophobic incidents, nor have they disclosed the victims’ nationalities.

South Africa has experienced recurring tensions related to immigration in recent years. Demonstrations targeting foreign nationals have taken place in several regions, fueled by concerns over employment opportunities, crime, and access to public services. Analysts note that anti-immigrant rhetoric has increasingly become a topic in local political debates, particularly ahead of upcoming municipal elections.

The latest events have raised concerns among regional leaders and human rights organizations, who continue to call for greater protection of migrant communities and stronger measures to prevent violence based on nationality or origin.
