FIFA ranking: Morocco loses two places following Mali stalemate
Morocco has slipped to seventh place in the FIFA world ranking following a 1-1 draw with Mali at the Grand Stade de Tanger, bringing an end to the national team's latest rise among the world's top-ranked sides.
The result came shortly after Morocco had reached a historic fifth position in the previous FIFA ranking, marking the highest-ever ranking achieved by the Atlas Lions. The draw against Mali, however, resulted in a two-place drop.
Portugal and Brazil move ahead of Morocco
The latest ranking reshuffles the positions immediately above Morocco. Portugal now occupies fifth place, while Brazil has moved up to sixth, pushing Morocco down to seventh.
Despite the setback in the ranking, Morocco remains among the leading national teams in world football, maintaining its position within the global top seven.
The change highlights the narrow margins that can separate teams at the top of the FIFA standings, where individual results can have a direct impact on a national side's position.
Ezzalzouli puts Morocco ahead in Tanger
Morocco appeared on course for a positive result against Mali after taking the lead during the match in Tanger.
Abde Ezzalzouli converted a penalty to give Walid Regragui's side the advantage. The Atlas Lions were unable to turn that lead into a victory, however, as Mali responded after the interval.
The visitors eventually found an equaliser, leaving the two teams level at 1-1 when the final whistle was blown.
A setback after a historic ranking rise
The draw represents a change in momentum on paper for Morocco after its record-breaking climb in the previous FIFA ranking. Reaching fifth had been a landmark achievement for the national team, which has continued to consolidate its status among the world's elite since its breakthrough performances on the international stage.
The latest drop does not erase that progress, but it does underline how quickly positions can change at the top of the FIFA rankings. For Regragui's squad, the focus now turns to producing results that can restore the ground lost after the draw with Mali.
