UK says RAF Fairford remains secure after US B-1 bomber withdrawal
The British government has said RAF Fairford remains secure following a reported security incident near the military base and the departure of US B-1 strategic bombers stationed there.
Downing Street confirmed that there had been no change in the government’s assessment of the security situation at the Gloucestershire airbase. The statement came after Sky News asked the Prime Minister’s office whether the facility remained safe.
The government also indicated that the American bombers could return to Fairford if Washington decided to redeploy them there. Downing Street declined to comment on whether Prime Minister Andy Burnham had discussed the situation with US President Donald Trump.
The statement followed reports that the United States had withdrawn all B-1 bombers from the British base amid security concerns surrounding an incident reported in late September. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, said the movement of the aircraft was part of a planned rotation of military assets rather than a direct response to the incident.
British police declared a major incident near RAF Fairford on September 27 and detained five British nationals on suspicion of terrorism-related offences and offences involving explosives. The suspects were subsequently released on bail while the investigation continued.
On October 1, police also detained a British-Iranian dual national in connection with the investigation. That individual was later released on bail as well. Authorities have continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the suspected plot and any possible links to foreign actors.
British officials have publicly raised concerns about possible Iranian involvement, while the Iranian Embassy in London has strongly rejected the allegations. The investigation remains ongoing, and no final conclusions about responsibility have been established.
RAF Fairford is an important facility for US strategic airpower in Europe and has hosted American long-range bombers during previous military operations. Its location and infrastructure allow the United States to deploy strategic aircraft to Europe when required.
The base has also gained renewed significance amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Britain authorized the United States earlier this year to use Fairford for specific defensive operations against Iran, while British officials have stressed that American aircraft operating from the facility are subject to agreed restrictions.
The withdrawal of the B-1 aircraft has therefore attracted considerable attention, but both London and Washington have emphasized that the movement does not necessarily signal a permanent change in their military cooperation. With the security investigation still underway, RAF Fairford remains an important element of the broader UK-US defense relationship.
