Abiy Ahmed reappointed as Ethiopia’s prime minister after election victory

Ethiopia’s parliament has reappointed Abiy Ahmed as prime minister, extending his tenure after his political party secured a sweeping victory in the country’s June elections.

The decision was announced on Monday during a televised parliamentary session by newly elected Speaker Ahmed Shide, who formally confirmed Abiy’s appointment to another term at the head of the Ethiopian government.

Abiy, who first became prime minister in 2018, has remained one of the country’s most prominent political figures. His government has pursued economic reforms while also facing major political and security challenges during his years in office.

The latest parliamentary vote follows the strong electoral performance of Abiy’s Prosperity Party in the June elections. The result gives the ruling party a renewed mandate as Ethiopia seeks to address economic pressures, strengthen institutions and manage complex domestic challenges.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country, plays an important political and economic role in the Horn of Africa. Developments under Abiy’s government are closely watched both domestically and by regional and international partners.
