Mali: Army expands operations against armed group positions across the country
Malian armed forces have intensified operations against positions attributed to armed groups, carrying out targeted actions in both the southern and northern parts of the country as authorities seek to disrupt logistical networks and militant concentrations.
According to the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa), intelligence operations on Sunday led to the identification of a suspected militant base roughly 10 kilometers southeast of Tiéré, in the Koutiala region. The site was reportedly being used to store vehicles and fuel, suggesting a logistical role in the activities of the armed group.
Following the verification of the intelligence gathered, Malian forces struck the position. The General Staff described the operation as successful but did not release details on possible casualties.
Operations extend to northern Mali
The military also reported activity farther north, near Anéfif, where two additional positions were identified northeast of the town.
One location was reportedly occupied by an armed group, while another involved a vehicle and its occupants. Both targets were subsequently engaged by Malian forces, according to the military statement.
The operations form part of a wider campaign combining intelligence gathering, surveillance and military strikes. The latest actions followed strikes announced the previous day against several armed-group positions approximately 40 kilometers south of Koutiala. Those sites were reportedly equipped with military hardware, including armed vehicles.
Intelligence at the center of military strategy
The sequence of operations highlights the growing importance of intelligence-led targeting in Mali's security campaign. Rather than focusing exclusively on established military positions, the authorities say their forces are seeking to identify temporary bases, vehicles and logistical facilities used by armed groups.
Similar operations have been reported in the Koutiala area in recent months, including strikes against concentrations of fighters and equipment in September.
The situation around Anéfif remains particularly sensitive. The northern locality has been at the center of intense fighting during 2026, with Malian forces and their partners facing armed groups operating across the wider Kidal region.
A conflict spanning multiple regions
Mali's security crisis has persisted for more than a decade, with violence involving jihadist organizations affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State as well as northern armed movements. The conflict has repeatedly shifted between the country's northern, central and southern regions, placing pressure on military forces operating across a vast territory.
The latest operations illustrate that geographic spread. While Koutiala has emerged as an important area of military activity in the south, Anéfif remains a key focus in the north.
The Malian authorities have not provided a consolidated casualty assessment for the latest operations. Further surveillance and reconnaissance activities are expected to determine the effects of the strikes and identify any remaining threats.
