DR Congo investigates deadly drone attack in Goma
Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have launched an investigation into a deadly explosion believed to be linked to drones in the eastern city of Goma.
The blast killed a French employee of UNICEF, identified as Karine Buisset, along with two other individuals, according to local reports. The explosion reportedly struck a residential building in a neighborhood frequently inhabited by expatriates and humanitarian workers.
In a statement, the Congolese Ministry of Communication and Media confirmed that authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, which caused fatalities and significant material damage.
Officials said the exact origin of the explosions and the conditions under which they occurred are still under investigation, particularly because the incident took place in an area currently outside the full control of government forces.
The United Nations condemned the attack, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of civilians and humanitarian personnel operating in conflict zones.
Eastern Congo has remained volatile amid ongoing clashes involving the March 23 Movement, which controls large parts of the region, including the provincial capitals of Goma and Bukavu since 2025.
The Congolese government and several international actors have accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels, allegations that Kigali has repeatedly denied.
Meanwhile, the rebel group’s spokesperson, Lawrence Kanyuka, claimed that the strike was carried out by forces linked to the government in Kinshasa. The Congolese authorities rejected the accusation, stating that they remain committed to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers.
The government also reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate with the United Nations and international partners to establish the facts surrounding the incident and to strengthen the protection of civilian populations in the conflict-affected region.
