Death of Tarik Bouidar, a leading figure in Moroccan press cartooning

Morocco’s media community is mourning the loss of Tarik Bouidar, one of the country’s most respected press cartoonists, who passed away at the age of 50. His death occurred during the night of Thursday to Friday, January 9, 2026, at a private clinic in Casablanca, following a long-term illness.

Known for his discretion and deep humanity, Tarik Bouidar published his work under the pseudonyms “Rik” and “Carlos.” Over more than two decades, he established a distinctive artistic signature that combined sharp humor, subtle irony, and thoughtful social commentary.

A graduate of the Higher School of Communication and Advertising (Com Sup), Bouidar became a familiar presence in the daily press. His cartoons offered readers moments of reflection and amusement while addressing political, social, and cultural issues with intelligence and sensitivity. His drawings were widely appreciated for their ability to question reality without aggression, using satire as a tool for dialogue.

The passing of Tarik Bouidar leaves a profound void in Morocco’s satirical press landscape. His work remains a testament to the power of visual journalism and its role in shaping public debate. He will be laid to rest on Friday at the Sidi Massoud Cemetery in Casablanca, following the midday prayer.
