Deadly Shooting in Nice: Investigation reveals collateral victims amid drug trafficking feud
The calm of the Moulins district in Nice was shattered on Friday night when automatic gunfire erupted around 9:10 p.m., leaving two people dead and five others injured. Less than 24 hours later, authorities confirmed that the attack was linked to drug trafficking networks operating between Nice and Marseille.
According to the Nice public prosecutor, Damien Martinelli, the shooting bore all the marks of gang-related violence tied to narcotics trafficking. Several victims were likely hit indiscriminately, suggesting that not all were targeted individuals.
The perpetrators, reportedly from Marseille, remain at large. Their getaway vehicle—a white Peugeot 3008 stolen in Marseille and later found burned in Mougins near Cannes—appears to fit the modus operandi of the powerful Marseille drug cartels known for their ruthless territorial conflicts.
Forensic teams recovered twenty-five Kalashnikov cartridges and five 9mm casings at the scene. Two victims, aged 20 and 59, died on the spot despite the swift intervention of emergency services. The other five, including a 14-year-old teenager, were hospitalized but are in stable condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation for “organized homicide,” “attempted homicide in an organized gang,” and “criminal conspiracy.” The inquiry is being handled jointly by the Nice Interdepartmental Police Service and the Marseille Judicial Police, under the supervision of the Nice prosecutor’s office and the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Marseille.
