Cuba asserts president’s term not negotiable in talks with US
A senior Cuban official confirmed on Friday that the nation’s political system and the term of President Miguel Diaz-Canel are not open for negotiation in ongoing discussions with the United States.
During a press briefing, Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio stated, “I can categorically confirm that the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation, and of course neither the president nor the position of any official in Cuba is subject to negotiation with the United States.”
The statement comes amid diplomatic talks between Havana and Washington aimed at addressing bilateral issues, including trade, travel restrictions, and regional cooperation. Cuban authorities emphasized that sovereignty over its political structure remains non-negotiable, reflecting longstanding principles of the nation’s governance.
Analysts note that such declarations underscore Cuba’s firm stance on internal political affairs while engaging with the United States on matters of mutual interest. The development may shape the trajectory of future diplomatic exchanges, as both countries seek areas of cooperation without compromising national autonomy.
