Money laundering: Morocco ranks among top 10 safest African countries
Morocco has been recognized as one of the safest African countries in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, according to the Basel Index 2025. Ranked 100th out of 177 countries worldwide, Morocco is positioned in a moderate vigilance zone at the global level, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen its financial regulatory framework.
The ranking highlights Morocco’s progress in aligning national legislation and institutional structures with international standards. On the African continent, the country ranks among the top 10 least exposed to money laundering risks, alongside nations such as Botswana, Seychelles, Tunisia, Egypt, and Senegal.
The Basel Index methodology evaluates 17 indicators, including corruption, public transparency, judicial efficiency, and financial control mechanisms. The report praises Morocco’s gradual compliance with recommendations from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), while emphasizing the need for continued supervision improvements to reach the highest global standards, as exemplified by countries like Finland.
