British Council Launches AiBC: A Human-first AI engine transforming english learning
LONDON, November 3, 2025 — The British Council has unveiled AiBC, an innovative AI-powered learning enginedesigned to revolutionize the way people around the world learn English. Drawing on more than 90 years of teaching experience, AiBC combines artificial intelligence with human expertise to deliver personalized, real-time feedback and build learners’ confidence in speaking English.
The new technology will first be integrated into the British Council’s online English learning platform, which connects students globally with expert teachers. AiBC offers learners additional opportunities to practice between lessons, simulating realistic conversations and providing instant feedback on grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation.
According to the organization, the system has been developed by British Council language specialists to expand classroom learning beyond live sessions. Learners can access AI-powered speaking activities after each topic and repeat them as often as needed, in a safe, judgment-free environment.
Mark Walker, Director of English and Exams at the British Council, said:
“We know that having real conversations in English is both a goal and a challenge for many learners. AiBC brings together our decades of teaching expertise with advanced AI to help learners practice authentic communication and build confidence anywhere, anytime.”
Research by the British Council shows that nearly 80% of UK teachers have adapted their teaching methods due to the rise of AI, integrating digital tools into assignments and communication practices. AiBC is designed to support this shift, focusing on “human-first AI” that complements teachers rather than replacing them.
All learner data will be securely handled under GDPR standards, ensuring privacy and safety. The British Council emphasizes that all interactions within AiBC remain educational, with feedback continuously reviewed for accuracy and inclusiveness.
The organization plans to expand AiBC’s capabilities over time to support broader English learning and assessment experiences. This initiative reflects the British Council’s commitment to responsible innovation, promoting learning and cultural connection through technology.
