Belgian court delays ruling in TotalEnergies climate lawsuit
A Belgian court has postponed its decision in a climate-related lawsuit filed against French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies SE. The case, brought by a local farmer, will now see a ruling on September 9, 2026.
Hugues Falys, a cattle farmer in Lessines, western Belgium, filed the suit seeking compensation for damages to his farm caused by climate change. He also requested a court order to stop TotalEnergies from investing in new fossil fuel projects, highlighting growing concerns over the environmental impact of continued fossil fuel development.
The case reflects an increasing trend of climate litigation in Europe, where individuals and communities are holding major energy companies accountable for contributions to climate change. While the Belgian court’s postponement delays any immediate resolution, the lawsuit underscores ongoing legal and public pressure on fossil fuel companies to transition toward sustainable energy practices.
