Telegram faces pressure as Russia says it violates local laws
Russian authorities stated on Wednesday that the messaging app Telegram continues to operate in violation of national laws, according to the state communications regulator Roskomnadzor. Telegram, one of the most widely used messaging platforms in Russia, has been repeatedly criticized by officials for allegedly allowing illegal and extremist content to circulate on its service.
Roskomnadzor emphasized that the company has yet to fully comply with Russian regulations despite repeated warnings. Telegram, however, has denied these claims and accused the government of attempting to limit its services. Critics suggest that this pressure may be aimed at encouraging users to switch to a state-run messaging application called MAX.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between international technology companies and local regulators in Russia, raising questions about internet freedom and digital governance in the country.
