Azerbaijan and Armenia sign historic peace deal establishing the ‘Trump Route’
The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a historic peace agreement at the White House on Friday, marking the end of nearly four decades of conflict in the South Caucasus region. Brokered by the United States, the deal aims to reopen key transportation routes and diminish Russian influence in the area.
A centerpiece of the agreement is the creation of a major transit corridor linking Azerbaijan to its exclave Nakhchivan, named the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.” The United States will hold the development rights for this strategic corridor, which is expected to include a rail line, oil and gas pipelines, and fiber optic cables.
Both Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev praised the deal, crediting former U.S. President Donald Trump and his team for brokering the agreement. Trump described the honor of having the corridor named after him as “a great honour” and expressed optimism for lasting peace.
The agreement was also welcomed by global leaders, including UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who urged rapid implementation to normalize relations fully.
The peace deal represents a major geopolitical shift in the South Caucasus, reducing Moscow’s longstanding influence, which had waned further following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Negotiations to develop the Trump Route are expected to begin soon, with significant international interest already noted.
