Israel continues deadly attacks in Gaza despite fragile ceasefire

Despite a recently brokered ceasefire, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have continued their attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, raising doubts about the agreement’s ability to secure lasting peace in the war-torn enclave.

Israeli forces killed five Palestinians in the Shujayea neighborhood of Gaza City, claiming the victims approached their troops. Additionally, two Palestinians were injured by Israeli gunfire in Khan Younis. According to Al Jazeera’s correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah, “gunfire can still be heard right now as Israeli troops often open fire at any movement near their positions, particularly in the eastern parts of the enclave.”

Ceasefire agreement signed amid ongoing violence

The ceasefire agreement was signed on Monday in Egypt by former US President Donald Trump alongside mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkiye. The deal came after Hamas released 20 living Israeli hostages and Israel freed nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Palestinian prisoners released as part of the agreement reported severe abuse and mistreatment during their detention, with over 10,000 Palestinians still unlawfully imprisoned without trials. Observers highlighted the stark contrast between the released Israeli hostages, who appeared healthy, and the Palestinian prisoners, many of whom were malnourished, underweight, and visibly traumatized.

Trump hailed the deal as a breakthrough, stating, “Together we have achieved what everybody said was impossible,” and claiming it would bring “peace in the Middle East.” Meanwhile, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry described the agreement as a “historic day” after years of failed attempts to end the violence.

However, skepticism remains as violence continues in Gaza, where Palestinians have endured over two years of constant attacks, displacement, and humanitarian crises. The international community will now closely monitor whether this fragile ceasefire will hold and lead to meaningful progress toward peace for the Palestinian people.
