Anti-Muslim acts in France have escalated sharply, with a 75% increase recorded in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to the French Interior Ministry. Violence against individuals has risen alarmingly, with attacks tripling over the past year, raising serious concerns about growing hostility toward religious minorities in the country.

Sharp rise in Islamophobic acts

Between January and May 2025, 145 anti-Muslim incidents were documented, up from 83 in 2024. Strikingly, most of these acts were direct assaults on individuals, with 99 cases reported, compared to just 32 the previous year. This marks a significant shift, as violent attacks now account for more than two-thirds of all Islamophobic incidents, underscoring the increasing vulnerability of Muslim communities in France.

One tragic incident in late April cast a spotlight on these dangers. Aboubakar Cissé, a young Malian man, was killed inside a mosque in southern France. His death sent shockwaves through the nation, symbolizing the rising risks faced by Muslims amid escalating tensions.

Broader religious hostility

The rise in anti-Muslim incidents is not an isolated phenomenon. Antisemitic acts remain alarmingly high, with 504 incidents reported between January and May 2025. While this marks a decline from 662 cases in 2024, it still represents a 134% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Of these, 64% targeted individuals, with 323 personal assaults recorded. Among the victims was Rabbi Elie Lemmel, who was attacked twice this spring.

Christians have also faced an increase in hostility. The first five months of the year saw 322 anti-Christian acts, compared to 284 during the same period last year, reflecting a 13% rise. Most of these incidents involved vandalism of churches and religious sites, with 271 cases making up 84% of the total. However, violence against individuals nearly doubled, with 51 reported attacks.

A climate of growing tension

France, home to Europe’s largest Muslim and Jewish populations, is witnessing a troubling surge in religious hostility. Muslims, who make up nearly 9% of the population, and Jews, who account for less than 1%, are disproportionately affected by such acts. These figures highlight a climate of hostility that is impossible to ignore.

Religious leaders, community advocates, and citizens are calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety of all communities. Many are urging the government to uphold the principles of equality and security enshrined in the French Republic, stressing that such acts threaten the very fabric of the nation.
