Biden Deflects Journalist’s Question on Gaza Hostage Deal Prospects
In a recent press interaction at the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden sidestepped a question regarding the likelihood of securing a ceasefire and the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza before the conclusion of his term. When asked by an Israeli journalist if a resolution could be expected by January, Biden responded with a quip about avoiding camera equipment, steering clear of directly addressing the inquiry.
The exchange occurred at the outset of Biden’s meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The question was posted online by the journalist, who expressed disappointment at the lack of a definitive response from the president on this sensitive issue.
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been criticized for allegedly hampering ceasefire efforts. The country recently saw heightened political discord following the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar hinted at "progress" in ceasefire talks with Lebanon, though no comparable developments regarding Gaza were reported.
For some in Gaza and Lebanon, the possibility of Donald Trump’s return to office in the United States raises additional concerns about stability in the region.
In his meeting with Herzog, Biden reiterated a steadfast commitment to Israel, stressing the close bilateral relationship. Herzog referenced the enduring plight of over 100 captives in Gaza, urging for their safe return.
Qatar, which has mediated previous negotiations, announced a pause in its facilitation efforts, awaiting more serious engagement from the involved parties. Meanwhile, the U.S. has extended its military support for Israel beyond a 30-day deadline, despite warnings from humanitarian groups.
United Nations official Joyce Msuya, citing grave human rights concerns in Gaza, urged the international community to address the escalating crisis. As violence continued in Gaza and beyond, the Israeli military issued additional evacuation orders in Lebanon, intensifying operations in Gaza’s north. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with tens of thousands killed or wounded in Gaza and heavy losses in Israel following the October 7 conflict.
