Colombia: 13 Dead After Collapse of Illegal Gold Mine

A mining accident has resulted in 13 deaths and seven injuries in southwestern Colombia. The collapse occurred on Wednesday evening at an illegal gold mining site, highlighting the risks faced by workers at these locations, often lacking adequate safety measures.

A Deadly Collapse in Nariño Department

The tragedy took place on Wednesday evening in the Nariño department in southwestern Colombia. Thirteen people lost their lives after a section of an illegally operated gold mine collapsed.

Seven others were injured in the accident, according to a local government official. Rescue teams on site had to operate in particularly challenging conditions, marked by rugged terrain.

Images shared on social media show excavators deployed at the site to assist in the operations.

A Landslide at the Heart of the Tragedy

According to Fredy Gámez, an official from the Nariño government, movements inside the mine caused a collapse of a backfill on the workers.

Initial reports also mention an explosion inside the operation, which may have preceded the landslides and the fall of materials.

The exact circumstances of the accident are still to be established, particularly regarding the cause of the explosion and the conditions under which the workers were present in the mine at the time of the collapse.

Illegal Mines Particularly Vulnerable

This accident occurs in a country where mining-related tragedies remain frequent. Illegal operations are particularly vulnerable, mainly due to the lack or inadequacy of controls and safety standards.

Illegal gold mining is an important activity in several Colombian regions, where it represents a source of income for many communities while exposing workers to considerable risks.

Collapses, explosions, and accidents related to working conditions can quickly lead to heavy human tolls in hard-to-reach sites.

A New Alert on Worker Safety

With 13 victims and seven injured, the Nariño tragedy once again illustrates the human consequences of working conditions in certain Colombian mining operations.

Beyond the immediate toll, the accident raises the question of safety at gold mining sites that evade control measures. Identifying the precise causes of the collapse will now be essential to determine the circumstances of the tragedy and any potential liabilities.
