Japan Prepares for Unprecedented Mission to Mars' Moons

13:28

Japan is poised to take a significant step in the exploration of the Martian system. On October 20, an H3 rocket is set to launch from Tanegashima carrying the MMX probe, designed to collect samples from one of Mars' moons and bring them back to Earth. This ambitious scientific mission could provide new insights into the formation of the solar system.

A Space Date Set for October 20

The date is now confirmed. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to launch the Martian Moons eXploration mission, commonly known as MMX, on October 20, 2026.

The probe will be propelled by an H3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center. The launch is scheduled for 4:41 AM Japan time, which is 7:41 PM GMT on October 19.

This uncrewed mission aims for a particularly ambitious goal: to reach the Martian environment, study its two moons, and collect materials from their surfaces before embarking on the return journey to Earth.

Phobos at the Heart of the Mission

MMX will notably focus on Phobos, the larger of Mars' two natural satellites. Studying this small moon could help scientists better understand its origin and, more broadly, the history of the Martian environment.

Sample collection is one of the most important elements of the mission. Analyzing these samples on Earth will provide researchers with a level of precision that is difficult to achieve with onboard instruments alone.

The materials brought back could thus provide information about Phobos' composition and contribute to the scientific debate regarding the origin of Mars' moons.

An International Mission

Although led by Japan, MMX is part of an international cooperation. The project involves American and European space agencies, as well as universities and companies specializing in space technologies.

This collaboration illustrates the growing complexity of distant exploration missions, which require complementary skills ranging from propulsion to space navigation, scientific instrumentation, and sample return system design.

Understanding the Origins of the Solar System

Beyond Mars and its satellites, scientists hope that the data collected by MMX will allow them to trace back further into cosmic history.

Studying materials from a relatively undeveloped celestial body could indeed provide clues about the conditions that prevailed during the early stages of the solar system's formation.

The mission could also contribute to research dedicated to the conditions that favored the emergence of life on Earth. While it may not provide a definitive answer to this question, the analysis of samples and data collected around Mars could enrich our understanding of the processes that shaped the various worlds of the solar system.

With MMX, Japan aims to play a major role in a new generation of space missions: those that do not merely observe distant worlds but aspire to bring back fragments directly to Earth.
