New WhatsApp channel and online form to combat cybersecurity threats in Catalonia
The Government of Catalonia has launched a new WhatsApp channel aimed at alerting citizens about "frauds" and "cybersecurity issues." This initiative is expected to reach a broader audience while continuing to provide alerts through the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia's website and social media platforms. To encourage the prevention of such online scams, an online form has also been created, allowing the public to report any cyberfrauds they come across. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, there were 71,772 cybercrimes detected in Catalonia in 2024 alone, averaging around 200 daily cases.
Laura Caballero, the director of the Cybersecurity Agency of Catalonia, explained that the initiative aims to improve protection for individuals and help build a safer and more empowered digital society. The WhatsApp channel will provide real-time updates on emerging frauds.
The agency also highlighted a significant rise in fraudulent calls, emails, and text messages designed to scam people. Furthermore, scams via WhatsApp, Telegram, and QR codes are becoming more prevalent. Given this, the Catalan government stresses the importance of public awareness to prevent such risks.
Caballero emphasized that staying informed is the first line of defense against cybercrime. Knowing how to spot and report current online scams is vital, especially as these digital crimes are becoming more sophisticated, particularly with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence. She also noted that cyberfrauds targeting businesses are expected to rise in 2025, and the communication channel will play a key role in alerting people to such threats. Data breaches have affected both public and private sectors, and no one is immune to these risks.
