Morocco's Sustainable Mining Industry Takes Center Stage at IMC Morocco 2024
Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering a sustainable mining industry during her speech at the first International Mining Congress of Morocco (IMC Morocco 2024) in Marrakech on Tuesday, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).
Benali’s remarks come at a time when Morocco’s mining sector is experiencing significant growth, fueled by the discovery of substantial metal reserves in various regions across the country. Highlighting Morocco’s strategic position in the mining industry, she emphasized the country’s competitive edge in resources, reserves, regulations, and sustainability practices.
“Morocco possesses a set of advantages, not only in terms of resources and reserves but also regarding regulations, institutions, and sustainability for producing electro-molecules, minerals, metals, and competitive low-carbon and zero-carbon products,” Benali told MAP.
She further assured that the nation’s energy transition goals would remain anchored in sustainability, with a focus on green practices. According to Benali, all electro-molecules, minerals, and metals produced and certified in Morocco—or transiting through the country—are fully sustainable and environmentally friendly.
The IMC Morocco 2024 event, supported by the Moroccan Federation of Industrial Minerals (FDIM) and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, is dedicated to showcasing Morocco’s investment framework. It provides updates on ongoing and completed reforms while exploring innovative financing models for mining projects.
This year’s gathering presents an opportunity for industry stakeholders to engage in discussions surrounding Morocco’s evolving mining landscape and its critical role in the global push for sustainability and energy transition.
