During an official visit to Rabat on Monday, the President of Mauritania’s National Assembly, Mohamed Bemba Meguet, emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral relations with Morocco, particularly through expanded political, economic, and cultural cooperation.

Speaking with Mohamed Ould Errachid, President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Bemba Meguet stated, “Mauritania, as a state and as a people, considers the development of its relationship with Morocco a top priority.” He applauded the ongoing collaboration between the legislative bodies of both nations and called for the activation of the Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum to address shared aspirations and reinforce ties.

Ould Errachid highlighted the historical connections between the two countries, rooted in common cultural, religious, and linguistic traditions, as well as geographic proximity. He commended the progress achieved in recent years under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, which has significantly deepened their partnership.

Expanding Cooperation and Tackling Regional Challenges

The discussions also emphasized the advanced legal framework underpinning Morocco-Mauritania cooperation, notably reinforced by the 2022 High Joint Commission. Ould Errachid underscored the need to expand joint investments and multi-sectoral partnerships, particularly in renewable energy, maritime fisheries, infrastructure, and professional training.

Cultural exchange was also a focal point, with calls to strengthen human connections and enhance parliamentary collaboration through the implementation of a memorandum of understanding. This agreement aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise in legislation, governance, and public policy evaluation.

Both leaders addressed the pressing challenges in the Sahel-Sahara region, including terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking, advocating for increased regional coordination. Ould Errachid also praised Morocco and Mauritania’s joint efforts in advancing Africa’s development, security, and stability.

Strategic Role in Regional Integration

Concluding the meeting, Bemba Meguet highlighted Mauritania’s pivotal role in regional integration initiatives, particularly its involvement in critical projects like the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline. This project is seen as a cornerstone for fostering economic cooperation and ensuring regional stability.

This renewed commitment to parliamentary cooperation and regional collaboration marks a significant step toward strengthening the ties between Mauritania and Morocco, setting the stage for deeper partnerships across various domains.
