Could Tangier Be the Next Grand Prix Destination?

Tangier is ambitiously vying to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, aiming to rejuvenate Morocco's motorsport legacy. If successful, it would mark the first Formula 1 event in the country since 1958.

According to Atalayar, hosting such an event could provide substantial economic benefits. With a global audience of 1.2 billion and over 250,000 attendees per race, Formula 1 can significantly boost tourism and elevate Morocco's status as a premier event destination.

The report notes, "While Morocco has previously hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix, that was back in 1958. Africa's growing presence in global sports could be key to Morocco hosting races in the near future."

The increasing popularity of Middle Eastern circuits within Formula 1 has set a favorable precedent for Morocco. Nations like Saudi Arabia have successfully integrated, highlighting opportunities for North African countries.

As the Formula 1 calendar becomes more congested, distributing circuits equitably is challenging. Recent investments and the focus on Middle Eastern tracks, spurred by major sponsors like Saudi Aramco, make Morocco's inclusion as Africa's representative a compelling prospect.

Formula 1 CEO Ben Sulayem has repeatedly voiced his interest in expanding Africa's presence in the sport.

However, Morocco faces hurdles, including stringent safety regulations and a crowded race schedule. Safety concerns have previously hindered other African venues, such as Kyalami in South Africa, from hosting events.
