Grand prix Hassan II draws record crowds in Marrakech
The 40th edition of the Grand Prix Hassan II concluded in Marrakech after ten days of competition that combined high-level tennis with strong public engagement. Hosted at the Royal Tennis Club, the ATP event confirmed its position as a key stop on the African tennis calendar, drawing international players and a growing local audience.
Spain’s Rafael Jodar secured the title after defeating Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Ranked 57th in the ATP standings, Jodar maintained control throughout the final, closing the match with consistent baseline play and limited unforced errors. His performance capped a steady run through the tournament and marked one of the defining moments of this anniversary edition.

The tournament also provided a platform for emerging Moroccan players. Reda Bennani, Karim Bennani, Taha Baadi, Amine Jamji and Younes Alami competed against experienced opponents, gaining exposure to top-level competition. Their participation reflects ongoing efforts by national authorities to strengthen the domestic pipeline. Hicham Arazi, captain of the national team, has played a central role in guiding these players, focusing on structured development and international readiness.
Attendance figures reached 33,000 spectators over the course of the event, including more than 10,000 during the final weekend. Organizers reported strong turnout from both Moroccan fans and international visitors. The atmosphere remained active throughout the tournament, with consistent engagement during matches. These figures signal increased public interest in tennis within Morocco and highlight the event’s growing appeal.
One of the notable additions this year was an exhibition match held at Jemaa El-Fna square. The initiative brought tennis into a public urban setting, allowing broader access beyond traditional venues. The event attracted passersby and visitors, expanding the tournament’s reach and reinforcing its connection with the city.
The Grand Prix Hassan II continues to contribute to Marrakech’s international visibility. The tournament attracts media coverage and supports tourism by positioning the city as a destination for major sporting events. Organizers aim to build on this momentum by strengthening partnerships and maintaining competitive standards.
The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Tennis, led by Fayçal Laaraichi, has emphasized long-term development through training programs and event organization. Since its founding in 1956, the federation has focused on expanding participation and raising the profile of Moroccan tennis. The 2026 edition reflects this strategy, combining competitive results with broader institutional goals.
