Moroccan nationals exempt from Irish visa application fees

Moroccan nationals are among a group of foreign citizens exempt from paying Irish visa application fees, according to Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery. The measure reduces the administrative cost of applying for an Irish visa, while leaving the visa requirement itself unchanged for Moroccan travellers who are required to obtain one.

Morocco is included in an official list of nationalities benefiting from the fee exemption alongside Bosnia and Herzegovina, Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Peru, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.

The exemption concerns the visa or preclearance application fee. Ireland's standard charges are €60 for a single-entry visa, €100 for a multiple-entry visa and €25 for a transit visa. These fees normally cover the administrative processing of applications and are not refundable if an application is refused or withdrawn.

For Moroccan citizens, however, being on the fee-exempt list does not automatically provide visa-free access to Ireland. Ireland maintains a separate system determining which nationalities require a visa, and Moroccan passport holders generally need to obtain the appropriate Irish visa unless another exemption applies to their individual circumstances.

The distinction is important for travellers planning holidays, family visits, business trips or other short stays. Applicants must still complete the required application process and provide the supporting documentation requested by the Irish authorities.

For a short-stay visit visa, applicants are required to submit documents supporting the purpose of their trip and demonstrating their circumstances. Depending on the case, this can include evidence concerning accommodation, finances, travel arrangements and other relevant aspects of the planned visit. Ireland advises applicants to prepare their documentation carefully because the information submitted is used in assessing the application.

The fee exemption also does not guarantee that a visa will be granted. Irish immigration authorities continue to assess applications individually under the applicable immigration rules. Applicants who incorrectly claim an exemption when they are not eligible may have their application withdrawn and could be required to submit a new application.

Moroccan applicants may submit visa applications through the Irish visa system and are directed to the appropriate office according to their circumstances. Ireland's visa office in Abu Dhabi, for example, handles applications from Morocco as well as several other countries in the region.

The measure could reduce the upfront financial burden for Moroccan travellers seeking to visit Ireland, particularly tourists, students, family visitors and people travelling for professional purposes. Nevertheless, applicants may still face other costs associated with document submission or external visa application services, depending on where their application is processed.

The Irish authorities therefore continue to distinguish between the cost of applying for a visa and the legal requirement to hold one. For Moroccan travellers, the fee exemption represents a reduction in application costs, but it does not remove the need to obtain an Irish visa when required before travelling to the country.
