Rabat police officer and sister arrested in suspected drug trafficking case
A police officer serving in Rabat and his sister have been arrested in connection with a suspected drug trafficking operation, following an investigation led by the Rabat judicial police in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The arrests were carried out on Sunday, September 27, as investigators examined suspected involvement in the possession, transportation and distribution of narcotics and psychotropic substances.
Drug haul seized on Tangier-Rabat motorway
The police officer was intercepted while travelling in a light vehicle on the motorway linking Tangier and Rabat.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 5,150 psychotropic tablets, 45 grams of cocaine and an undisclosed amount of Moroccan currency, according to reports citing security authorities.
The seizure prompted investigators to extend their inquiries beyond the initial arrest as they sought to establish the suspected distribution chain and determine whether other individuals were connected to the case.
Investigation leads to Ain El-Aouda
The subsequent investigation led police to Ain El-Aouda, near Rabat, where the officer’s sister was arrested.
Investigators suspect that the seized drugs and psychotropic substances were intended for her and that the shipment was allegedly destined for distribution. The exact circumstances surrounding the suspected transaction remain subject to the ongoing judicial investigation.
Both suspects were placed in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor. The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances of the arrests and establish whether the suspected activity involved wider criminal links or additional participants.
Police officer suspended pending judicial proceedings
Alongside the criminal investigation, Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has provisionally suspended the police officer from duty.
The administrative measure was taken while the judicial process continues and follows procedures applicable to security personnel suspected of involvement in criminal acts.
The suspension is separate from the judicial proceedings, which will determine the legal status of the two suspects and the facts ultimately established by the competent authorities.
Authorities investigate possible wider connections
The case comes as investigators continue to examine the movement and intended destination of the seized substances.
The involvement of both a serving police officer and a family member has prompted an investigation into the possible extent of the suspected operation. Authorities are seeking to clarify whether the seized drugs were part of a broader trafficking network and whether other connections can be established.
For now, the two individuals remain suspects in an ongoing case, and the final legal outcome will depend on the findings of the judicial investigation and subsequent proceedings.
