Gradual withdrawal of American troops from Syria

The United States has started reducing its military presence in Syria, decreasing the number of bases from eight to three, with the final goal of maintaining only one base. This announcement was made by the U.S. special envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, during an interview with Turkish TV channel NTV.

Barrack explained that the ongoing mission, Inherent Resolve, which targets jihadist groups, is being gradually scaled down. He emphasized that although President Donald Trump has ruled out a full withdrawal, the U.S. will consolidate its forces, reducing troop numbers without any reinforcements.

In mid-April, the U.S. had declared it would cut its military presence in Syria by half, citing successful operations against the Islamic State (ISIS), despite ongoing activity from jihadist groups amid the country's unstable transition.

Currently, around 2,000 U.S. soldiers are deployed in Syria, but the Pentagon aims to reduce this number to less than 1,000 in the coming months.
