Kremlin rules out Trump-Putin call as Ukraine talks stall

The Kremlin has stated that no telephone call is currently planned between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and no date has been set for a possible visit to Moscow by American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The announcement reflects a pause in high-level diplomatic engagement over the war in Ukraine, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov said the mediation process on Ukraine remains suspended in its formal structure, although communication channels between Russian and American representatives continue to function. He added that discussions with Ukrainian officials are also ongoing through indirect channels. According to him, Moscow has not received detailed updates regarding recent contacts between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the American negotiators, which Zelensky described as constructive.

The Kremlin also downplayed the significance of limited coordination between Washington, Kyiv and Moscow. Peskov said that if any substantive progress were achieved, it would be quickly transmitted through established negotiation channels. Ukrainian and American officials are still reportedly discussing the possibility of further meetings in Kyiv in the coming weeks, but no firm schedule has been confirmed.

Russia has simultaneously hardened its position on external mediation. President Vladimir Putin has rejected the idea of European involvement in peace talks, arguing that countries providing military support to Ukraine cannot act as neutral intermediaries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also emphasized that developments on the battlefield, rather than diplomatic efforts, will determine the trajectory of the conflict.

The current diplomatic standstill contrasts with earlier phases of engagement when American negotiators held meetings in Moscow and participated in talks in European cities such as Geneva and Berlin. With no new summit dates confirmed and key channels losing momentum, the scope for near-term negotiations appears increasingly limited.
