US marks 250 years of independence with Morocco partnership celebration
The United States marked the 250th anniversary of its independence in Rabat on Tuesday with a diplomatic reception that brought together Moroccan officials, foreign diplomats, and representatives from the public and private sectors at the Chellah historic site. The event placed emphasis on the long-standing relationship between Morocco and the United States and highlighted ongoing cooperation across multiple fields.
The celebration underlined nearly two and a half centuries of diplomatic ties between the two countries. Morocco became the first nation to recognize American independence in 1777, a decision that laid the foundation for one of the oldest continuous diplomatic relationships in US history. Officials at the event framed the anniversary as both a reflection on shared history and a signal of future cooperation.
The US ambassador to Morocco, Richard Duke Buchan III, described the relationship as one built on historical roots and sustained trust. He said the partnership continues to evolve with a focus on long-term cooperation in diplomacy, security, trade, investment, education, and cultural exchange. In remarks linked to the celebration, he stressed that both countries are preparing to deepen collaboration over the next decades.
Moroccan energy transition and sustainable development minister Leila Benali highlighted the strategic nature of bilateral ties. She said the partnership reflects a shared vision aimed at strengthening global value chains and improving economic resilience. She added that Morocco intends to continue working closely with the United States to support stability and prosperity at regional and international levels.
The event also recalled key milestones in the relationship, including the US decision in 2020 to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Sahara. That decision contributed to expanded cooperation in security, counterterrorism, and trade. Officials pointed to growing joint initiatives as evidence of a deepening strategic alliance.
Diplomatic references also extended to historical sites symbolizing the relationship, including the American Legation in Tangier, the oldest US diplomatic property outside the United States. The embassy reception concluded with a public celebration in Rabat featuring fireworks and a drone display, marking what organizers described as a milestone in two and a half centuries of partnership.
